Landscape Construction

“Mike and his team are true artisans in landscape construction.”

For more than 20 years Terrapin has been installing custom landscapes that are beautiful, functional, and befitting of Maine. Whether we’re building from our own design or collaborating with your architect, we shape spaces that evoke a sense of belonging unique to your property, be it coastal Cape Elizabeth, woodsy Sebago Lake, or quaint Kennebunk.

Our Bespoke Landscape Installs

Every landscape construction project is different, working with the natural contours of the land and the design to decide what is planted and where it goes. We’ve installed landscapes as small as a few hundred square feet to as large as 5 acres. Landscape installation is the part of the process where all the ideas and drawings finally come to life. It often goes hand in hand with hardscape construction for a complete transformation of your outdoor space. Here’s what your landscape install may include:

  • Grading
  • Drainage
  • Soil preparation
  • Irrigation systems
  • Annual & perennial plantings
  • Tree & shrub plantings
  • Lighting installation
  • Sod and mulch application

Design-Build

Our talented landscape designer will evaluate your land, talk through your dreams, and work with your budget to map out your ideal outdoor space. We specialize in native plantings and granite accents, creating landscapes that look and feel like they’ve always existed. In this approach, we shepherd your project through every stage, from initial ideas through precision installation.

Stand-alone Installation

Maine is full of exceptional architects and builders, and we love partnering with other professionals to budget, manage, and install beautiful landscapes. If you already have a landscape design from your builder or landscape architect, we can collaborate to ensure their vision is installed with exceptional care. As an added bonus to our building partners, we offer complimentary landscape construction estimates to build better, more accurate plans and bids.

Our Process from the Ground Up

With an approved design in hand, here’s how your landscape construction project will proceed. We’ll stay in touch throughout the process through your preferred channel, whether that’s email updates, quick texts, phone calls, site visits or all the above.

As needed, we’ll coordinate with local authorities to acquire the right permits, ensure your property is zoned for its intended use, and perform setback staking or shoreline stabilization for waterfront properties.

Before anything goes in the ground, we’ll set the stage by grading the land, ensuring proper drainage and coordinating any necessary excavation or demolition. In this stage we’ll also order materials, so all the pieces are in place for install.

Our horticulturalists, fine gardeners, and hardscape experts get their hands dirty, expertly executing every element of your design. We’ll also coordinate with subcontractors like plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and pool professionals to complete the picture.

With the final stone laid and the last perennial planted, nothing beats the moment when it all comes together. Let us tour you around before we leave you to enjoy your new outdoor living space.

Most of our landscape construction clients opt to use our fine gardening services to maintain their new space. We visit throughout the year for seasonal plantings, pruning, and reapplication of mulch or soil.

Featured Project: Jordan Bay

This lakeshore project in Naples was all about subtlety—creating a soft transition from the home to the beach without breaking the rhythm of the land. A meandering path winds through wide swaths of native plantings, where texture and color shift with the light. Tall pines were thoughtfully preserved, their slender shadows echoing the lines and movement of the surrounding design. The result is a landscape that feels deeply intentional but never overworked.
