Hardscaping

“Amazing custom stone quality and work.”

Hardscaping brings structure and function to your property—from gathering spots and walking paths to walls that hold back grade and frame the view. We design and install stonework that fits the land and reflects the people who live there. We’ve been building patios, pools, fire features, and retaining walls across Southern Maine for more than 20 years.

Our Time-Honored Hardscape Installs

Our hardscape construction projects start with the land—its shape, its features, and how you hope to use it. Whether you need a patio just big enough for your dining set or terraced retaining walls and winding pathways that span entire slopes, we’ll add structures that complement your unique property and lifestyle. Hardscaping often goes hand in hand with landscape installation to add texture and life. Here’s what your hardscape project may include:

  • Dry stone walls
  • Walkways
  • Patios
  • Driveways
  • Firepits & fireplaces
  • Soake pools
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Retaining walls

Two Ways to Build with Terrapin

What do you need to get a hardscape project off—or in—the ground? Whether you’re dreaming something up from scratch or already have a set of plans in hand, we’ll meet you where you are. We offer full-service custom stonework installation across Southern Maine for both Terrapin-designed projects and plans developed by trusted architects and builders. Find the approach that fits your needs.

Design-Build

Our in-house designer will walk your land, listen closely to your ideas, and work within your budget to shape a hardscape that fits naturally into the site. We’re known for working with reclaimed and local granite, dry stone work, and creating spaces that feel like they’ve always belonged. With this approach, our team leads every phase from initial ideas through precision installation.

Stand-alone Installation

We’re proud to collaborate with some of Maine’s top architects and builders to bring well-designed hardscapes to life. If you already have a plan in hand, we’ll handle the install with care and craftsmanship—keeping the original vision intact and on track. We also offer complimentary hardscape estimates to help our peers in the industry bid confidently and build smarter from the start.

Our Process from the Ground Up

Once your design is approved, we’ll move forward with your hardscape installation. We’ll keep in close contact along the way—whether you prefer email updates, texts, calls, site visits, or all of the above.

If your project requires it, we’ll handle the permitting process, confirm proper zoning, and take care of things like setback staking or shoreline stabilization for waterfront properties.

We’ll get the grounds ready—grading the site, ensuring drainage, and coordinating any excavation or demolition needed to prep for install. During this phase, we’ll also order materials, so everything’s lined up for a smooth build.

Our crew gets to work—laying stone, building walls, and shaping each detail to match the design. We’ll also bring in and coordinate with any necessary subcontractors like electricians, plumbers, carpenters, or pool specialists.

Once the final stone is in place, we’ll walk the space with you and make sure you’re fully oriented and happy with the result. Then it’s yours to enjoy.

The Art of Dry Stone

Dry stone work is one of the oldest construction methods still in use—and one of the most rewarding. Our team has spent years perfecting this craft, hand-fitting each stone without mortar to create walls that are solid, breathable, and built to last. It takes time, patience, and a deep understanding of the material—something our crew of certified dry stone masons take pride in bringing to every project. Over time, these walls age gracefully, softened by lichen, moss, and weather, settling into the landscape like they’ve always been there. It’s honest work, and we love doing it.

A Pool Made for Maine Summers

We’re proud to be a certified installer for Soake Pools, offering clients a compact, elegant way to cool off and unwind. These hand-tiled plunge pools are easy to maintain, energy-efficient, and beautifully suited to Maine’s seasons—enjoy cool dips in the summer and warm soaks in the winter. Terrapin handles everything from placement and install to the surrounding hardscaping—like natural stone pool decks, integrated seating, and privacy walls—so your pool feels like it’s always been part of the plan.

Featured Project: The Old Fort

Set behind a restored boarding house, this landscape was shaped around a series of carefully crafted hardscape features. The patio steps lead to a hidden terrace, where friendly boulders frame the firepit and invite lingering. Natural stone paths and retaining walls carve out gathering spaces, while a gentle slope gives way to a lawn ringed by native plantings. Every element was built to feel connected—from the first step out the door to the last seat by the fire.
