Binnacle Hill is a wooded neighborhood by Goose Rocks Beach, with large ledge outcroppings and winding drives developed by Geoff Bowley of Kennebunk-based Bowley Builders. One such ledge outcropping was selected as the entry point of the site and exposed to become a prominent landscape feature. The site-specific landscape design by Soren Deniord features a north-facing courtyard where ferns and woodland plantings come to meet the house and a sunny lawn space perfect for child play. A wooded buffer of preserved mature trees conceals the driveway from the house. Flanking the driveway a free-standing drystone wall, capped with Reclaimed Foundation Granite defines the edge of the property. Reclaimed granite was also sourced for the patio surface and custom built fire pit. Native plantings of Blueberry, Viburnum, Eupatorium, Aster and Spiraea mix with non-native culitvars to create a garden palate that compliments the woodland site.

The gardens were kept simple so the homeowner could add a personal touch to the landscape.
The Renovation Project
Services Provided: Hardscape Design and Installation: Driveway, Stepping Stones, Back Patio and Granite Steps, Front Walk/Wall/Steps
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
With ocean front lot coverage restrictions in mind, a design was created using every inch of lot coverage available! This client wanted to upgrade from a stone pebble driveway and also eliminate the current driveway water pooling problem. Cambridge pavers were installed with a permeable cobblestone apron allowing water to drain appropriately. The front walkway, wall and steps were replaced to match. To improve access to the back yard, a blue stone staircase was installed leading to the newly expanded bluestone patio created with outdoor dining in mind. The turf was regraded and freshly installed adding granite steps to step from the deck down to the lawn.
The 2018 Flower Show
Location: Portland, Maine
The theme for this show was ‘Rooted in Maine’ and our goal was to create a dining space that transported the visitor to a bouldered oasis at the base of their favorite Maine mountain. The concept evoked our desire to showcase the pride we have in our craftsmanship and horticultural activity. The display won 6 awards, a flower show record.

With a renovated boarding house as our backdrop, this landscape began as overgrown hedge-rows and a glut of undergrowth. Our design intended to open the space up allowing an opportunity for exploration and communal gatherings. From the patio steps, one can venture into a hidden terrace and enjoy a boulder seat by the firepit. Or one can wander barefoot down the rolling lawn into an activity area surrounded by native plants and trees. Each nook is interconnected to provide flow and continuity, allowing the homeowners a path to their desired destination no matter where their journey begins.
The Maine Street Project
Services Provided: Landscape/Hardscape Design and Installation including Stonework, Lighting, Irrigation, Turf and Plantings, and Regular Maintenance
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
The goal of this project was to design a patio for the homeowner’s love of bluestone. The unique shape allows for a firepit on one side and a dining area on the other, maximizing the patio’s use. Keeping the garden beds small, provided more lawn for the dogs of the house to enjoy. The driveway is stunning allowing a soft entrance to a quiet escape.
The Marshall Point Project
Services Provided: Landscape/Hardscape Design and Installation including Outdoor Kitchen, Stonework, Lighting, Irrigation, Turf and Plantings, and Regular Maintenance
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
The goal of this landscape renovation stemmed from the homeowner’s desire for an outdoor kitchen. Based on an initial consultation, we generated designs that reflected the homeowner’s goals and style.
In addition to the kitchen, a new, larger patio was installed using geometric granite pavers creating a usable space overlooking the ocean. The redesigned and rebuilt garden beds brought the full vision together.
The Goose Rocks Cottage Project
Services Provided: Landscape/Hardscape Design and Installation including Stonework, Lighting, Irrigation, Turf and Plantings, and Regular Maintenance
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
The goal of this project was to create a design that provided a private entry to the property’s rental cottage, without completely separating the two. It was also very important to be conscientious of the surrounding marsh. The bold paver driveway and landscape lighting detail rounded out the gorgeous design.
The Goose Rocks Project
Services Provided: Landscape/Hardscape Design and Installation including Stonework, Lighting, Irrigation, Turf and Plantings, and Regular Maintenance
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
The primary goal of this project was to create outdoor living that offered a mix of formal and natural spaces, which the design was tailored to reflect. The secondary goal was to create an elevated vantage point to soak in the stunning ocean views. The installation of large granite flagging leading up to a curved retaining wall created a terrace that accomplished this goal. The full design came together by keeping with a rustic themed landscape, complete with native plant life.

The 2017 Flower Show
Location: Portland, Maine
The theme for this show was “Plant Something Maine.” Inspired by the granite bench, the plants (native to Maine) fit nicely and provided a rustic feel to the display. The display received a great response, winning 3 awards including ‘Best in Show’! The bench now resides beside the Tree of 40 Fruit on Thompson’s Point in Portland, for all to enjoy.
