Frequently Asked Questions

Starting a landscape project can bring up a lot of questions—about timelines, budgets, regulations, and what to expect along the way. Below are answers to some of the questions we hear most often. If you’re still wondering about something, feel free to reach out directly.

Having a budget in mind helps ensure your initial design is realistic. But if you’re not sure, we’ll talk through your wish list and provide design options that span a range of budgets.

Most installs are booked about a year in advance. Starting the design process early increases the likelihood of securing a spot in the upcoming season.

Project design can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, dependent on the full scope of work and updates needed. We communicate clearly about timing from the start.

Project size, demolition or disposal needs, material selection, permitting, complexity, and extras like Soake Pools or outdoor kitchens all affect the final number. Once an initial estimate is provided, we work with you to prioritize features and refine material choices to meet your budget without compromising the overall design.

Value engineering is the process of refining your design to better align with your budget—without sacrificing what matters most. It might mean swapping a specialty stone for attractive pavers, adjusting a patio layout to reduce grading, or simplifying a fire feature to reduce masonry. We’ll walk you through smart alternatives and tradeoffs so you get the look and function you want at an efficient cost. It’s not about cutting corners—it’s about making good decisions.

For custom designs, we collect 50% of the design fee after your complimentary consultation and estimate, allowing us to begin detailed planning.

For landscape and hardscape installs, we collect 50% upfront for special order or custom materials, and 33% of total project cost within the first 30 days of breaking ground.

This includes zoning research, permitting, and communication with local officials. We handle this for you and it usually takes 2–3 weeks.

Shoreland zoning laws vary by town and may affect what and where we can build near water. We’re experienced in navigating these regulations and securing the right approvals.

A current property survey helps clarify boundaries, elevations, and zoning constraints, which leads to a smoother design and install process. We can refer you to trusted land surveyors in your area.

Turf care is part of our ongoing Fine Gardening service for existing clients. We don’t offer mowing or general maintenance as a stand-alone service.

Native plants thrive in Maine’s climate, require less water and care over time, and support local ecosystems. They also age beautifully as they establish. Learn more about our unique landscaping approach.
